UNDERGRADUATE MEDICAL STUDIES

I succeeded the entry exams in the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), and I graduated in 1982 with graduation mark, “Very Good”.

AWARDED DEGREES

-PTYCHIO IATRIKES (MEDICAL DEGREE) ( ), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School, Very Good, 27/4/1982.

I studied the action of a new hypophysial protein applying many original techniques in the classical and the paracrine pituitary function.

SPECIALITY OF ENDOCRINOLOGY: after exams, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School, (11/3/1993).

Medical Doctorate Thesis (Honours) National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School, Clinico-laboratory Sector (Endocrinology, Pathophysiology, in collaboration with the department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Prof Dr Koutselinis, (12/7/1994), (Honours) “Investigations of the action of two novel dopaminergic drugs, CV205-502 CQP201-403 in the secretion of prolactin and growth hormone” (today they are used successfully as carbenolones and are applied in the therapeutic practice by the endocrinologists worldwide with very good results.

Master Degree (MSc) in the History and Philosophy of Sciences and Technology. This is a multidisciplinary master program that is offered from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) and the National Metsovian Highest Polytechnic School (EMP) of Athens, the Faculty of Methodology, History and Theory of Sciences (EKPA), the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Justice (EKPA) and the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Physics) (EMP). APPLICATIONS OF MY RESEARCH WORK

1) Development of a new and original method for separation and study of pituitary cell cultures with surface fluorescence. Application of this technique in the investigation of normal and adenomatous pituitary tissue. Ability to study pituitary cell subpopulations, paracrine function and other combinations with the method of flow cytometry. The method was used by other international laboratories and was received by enthousiasm by the international scientific community.

2) Discovery of the role of galanin in the control of pituitary secretion and its effect in pancreatic function. Especially, study in its effect in the control of prolactin and growth hormone secretion.

3) Discovery of the effect of neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the secretion of pituitary adenomas.

4) Many original observations for the physiological role of the pituitary protein 7B2 in vitro and in vivo in healthy volunteers and in patients with different diseases. The role of this pituitary and paneuroendocrine protein is important since it is indispensable for the synthesis of the proconvertases system and since transgenic animals which lack 7B2 develop a syndrome which is indistinguishable from Cushings disease.

5) Initial evaluation and application (with the support of Sandoz), of two potent dopaminergic drugs (carbenolones) in the treatment of pituitary disorders. Contribution in their already wide use.

6) Study in a wide scale of the psychosexual function of a big sample of the Greek and non-Greek population of varying age.

7) Many scientific observations in male and female sexuality and reproduction (pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, pharmaceutical and psychotherapeutic intervention (Athens Medical sex Institute, ISIA).

8) Many clinical and research observations in the techniques and pharmaceutical treatment of subfertility in men and women (collaborations with undergraduate and postgraduate students, PhD candidates, colleagues, IVF centers and Gynaecological University Clinics).

9) Research approach to Assisted Reproduction in its contemporary dimension for both male and female population.

10) Many historical research studies on Endocrinological, Laboratory, Reproductive, Sexual and Psychiatric subjects (under prepraration)
